Frankenstein Walk

A wacky way to warm-up, the Frankenstein Walk helps to increase body temperature and prepare the body before exercising. Avoid becoming a walking mummy and warm up before any exercise to prevent injury and enhance flexibility. Here’s how to do it:

1. Starting with a straight standing position, step forward with the right foot and move the left leg out in front and at the same time moving the right hand in the direction of the left leg. You want to mimic the movement of Frankenstein.

2. Keep your knee over your ankle, your hips and shoulders squared off with your front leg and your arms away from your body.

For greater challenge, add hand weights to hold out in front of the body.

Pumpkin Workouts

It doesn’t take a (mad) scientist to work out that a pumpkin can be used as a weight. Our members showed off their best exercises with a pumpkin and the results were pretty impressive.

Here’s a few you can try at home, based on classic personal trainer exercises like push-ups, lunges and presses:

Seated Pumpkin Twist

Target your core muscles with this spooky Seated Pumpkin Twist:

  1. To give it a go, sit on the floor with your knees bent. Hold a small pumpkin in front of your chest with both hands. Lean back slightly.

  2. Keeping your back straight and core braced, rotate your torso as far to the right as you can, and then as far to the left as you can. That’s one rep.

  3. To increase difficulty, hold the pumpkin farther away from your chest.

Pumpkin Lunge

Switch up your lunges and have a gourd time toning up your quads, glutes and core!

  1. Stand tall, holding a smaller pumpkin overhead with both hands. Keep your back straight and core engaged.

  2. Step forward with your right leg, lowering your body until your right thigh is parallel to the floor. Ensure your left knee doesn't touch the ground. Pause, then push back up to the starting position. Repeat with the other leg.

Pumpkin Push-up

Give the classic push-up a spooky makeover with this squash-powered exercise:

  1. Assume a push-up position with a pumpkin placed three inches in front of your right hand. Keep your body straight, feet together, and core engaged.

  2.  Lower your chest towards the floor, squeezing the pumpkin with your right hand. Pause at the bottom, then push back up to the starting position. Switch sides for each set.

Pumpkin Press

Pick up your pumpkin and get ready to take your press to spooktacular new heights:

  1. Stand with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart, toes pointing out slightly. Place a smaller pumpkin between your feet. Keep your back straight.

  2. Keeping your back flat, straight, and core braced, lower your body and grab the pumpkin with both hands.

  3. Straighten your legs and lift the pumpkin to chest level. Press it overhead until your arms are fully extended. Pause, then lower the pumpkin back to the floor. This is one rep.

Deadly Deadlifts

Dressing up in a killer costume for your deadlifts isn’t essential but it sure makes this workout a lot of fun! Give your hamstrings and your glutes a solid workout by using two dumbbells of the same weight:

  1. Place your feet underneath your hips with the dumbbells in front of your body.

  2. Hinge your hips back and lower the dumbbells towards your shins. Keep your knees slightly bent and your shoulders squeezed together to maintain a flat back.

  3. As you come up, drive the hips forward and lift the torso back up to the starting position.

Halloween HIIT

HIIT (also known as High-Intensity Interval Training) is a high-energy, calorie-burning routine that gets your heart rate up, burns fat and builds muscle.

From Burn HIIT to HIIT Step there’s lots of different styles of HIIT class to choose from, which is perfect for those who find themselves easily bored with their fitness routine. Plus HIIT classes often involve some gut-busting tunes guaranteed to get your body moving. (Definite plus point!)

Shake it up and give a few of these spooky-inspired Halloween HIIT moves a go:

Spider Crawl Planks

Add a creepy-crawly dimension to your planks and target your core, shoulder and arms with this killer move. Starting off in the plank position, alternate lifting your knees toward your elbows while crawling forward like a spider.

Witch Sprints

Using a broom or stick as your marker, sprint to the broomstick and back. Add in some high knees or butt kicks for an extra challenge.

Jumping Jacks (O’Lanterns)

Embrace the child-like spirit of Halloween and bust out some jumping jacks to burn those calories fast. You don’t need any equipment to give this one a go. In fact, they can be done practically anywhere.

To do a Jumping Jack (O’Lantern):

  1. Stand with your feet together and your arms at your sides.

  2. Jump your feet out to a wider stance, simultaneously raising your arms overhead.

  3. Continue jumping your feet in and out and your arms up and down in a continuous motion.
