Tips For Squash Players

by

Squash offers a great cardio workout for those that love a little healthy competition with friends, and a little variety in their usual training programme.

Whilst the key is to prevent your opponent from returning the ball, there are plenty of handy tricks you can use in order to make this more likely.

Our top tips for outsmarting your squash opponent...

GO LONG

Go for a long shot by hitting the ball firmly at service line, and aim to hit the floor near the back of service box.

CORNER IT

Hitting the ball towards the corner will allow you to maintain control over the central T zone.

KEEP IT CLOSE

Try to keep the ball as close to the side wall as possible. This allows you to anticipate your opponent's shot more easily.

HOG THE T

You should be able to return around 65% of your opponent's shots in one stride when you're stood in the T. So don't wear yourself out uneccessarily. Control the rally by keeping yourself in the T as much as possible.

EYE ON THE BALL

It's not a popular saying for nothing. Watch the ball at all times. When it hurtles towards your raquet, as it hits your opponent's raquet, follow that ball around the room! This will help you to practice anticipating where it will land.

RUN RINGS AROUND THEM

Make your opponent run. Tiring them out will (hopefully) weaken their position over time. Aim your shots away from where they are standing to force them to sprint for it. Or aim up and down the walls with short, quick shots. Keep them on their toes!

SWITCH THE PACE

Change the pace of the ball to keep your opponent curious. If you're feeling worn out, switch to a slower pace to allow yourself a little recovery time. If they're looking a little beaten, turn up the speed for maximum exhaustion.
