Fitness Trends For The Summer

Summer is in full swing, and we're looking forward to lazy afternoon BBQs, splurging on the latest athleisure and a whole host of new fitness fads to get stuck into.

A look at the fitness trends sweeping in for the summer...

GROUP IT

Research shows that group exercise is now more popular than swimming and running*, with 3.76 million more people exercising in groups in the last two years.

Not only is exercising in groups way more motivational, but the variety of group options mean there's something to suit all tastes, ages and levels of ability.

Who doesn't enjoy a little fitness with your closest friends? Grab your nearest and dearest for a Village Gym studio class or jog en-masse outdoors.

LOWER INTENSITY, HIGHER IMPACT

LIIT training will still burn the same calories as a solid HIIT session, but will take an extra 30-40 minutes to complete. Luckily, the lighter nights leave us plenty more time to enjoy our exercise sessions, so a brisk outdoor walk with varying speeds is the perfect way to get your LIIT done.

Researchers at Ohio State University found that 8% of energy used when walking is from stopping and starting. Changing direction, turning around or walking in a curve can burn 20% more than walking in a straight line. Keep your body guessing by changing direction and speed every 4-5 minutes.

JUMP

NASA scientists say that bouncing on a trampoline is 68% more effective for cardiovascular health than a jog. Not only does it take less physical effort, it's way more fun too!

Trampolining took off last year, thanks to the emergence of numerous jump classes throughout the UK. It's a great way to tone, whilst getting your low impact cardio done. One to watch for the summer.

DNA DISCOVERY

Our DNA dictates a lot about how our bodies perform and how we should look after them. Understanding the make-up of our DNA can help us improve gym performance, health and wellbeing.

Your DNA has a big influence on many factors which affect your fitness and weight, including how efficient your metabolism is, your levels of hunger-affecting hormones such as ghrelin, your sensitivity to sugar, saturated fats and other macronutrients.

Many of our members have already praised our DNAFit kits. A non-intrusive process that takes minutes via a home-test saliva swab kit. Once analysed, you'll receive a report outlining the results. Find out more.

HIGH INTENSITY DIP

Think, aquacise, with maximum impact. High intensity water aerobics such as Water XTreme, involve newly developed Speedo aquatic training aids to add resistance in the water and increase the intensity of your workout.

Around three quarters of the class is spent in the pool performing high intensity moves, while the rest of the time is spent performing traditional exercises such as push-ups, lunges, and triceps dips. A bootcamp that involves a dip. Perfect for poolside weekends or getting your regime done whilst you're away.

ON THE RUN

A study from fitness app Strava revealed that runners are happier.  Out of 8,000 people, 89 per cent said taking part in a Parkrun event lifted their mood.

Running is a great summer activity.  Warmer mornings, lighter nights, plenty of greenery to enjoy as you speed by... and the fact that nothing beats the feeling of the sun shining on your face.

Dig out those running shoes, and go for it.
